The Colts will barely miss the playoffs after being upset by the Jacksonville Jaguars 26-11. Where do the Colts go from here?
They brought in Carson Wentz this season hoping he and Frank Reich could rekindle the magic they had in Philadelphia. That didn’t happen, but there is a way to improve the offense for next season.
They need weapons on the outside.
Michael Pittman Jr. is a good wide receiver, but he’s not a true number one. TY Hilton isn’t what he used to be. The Colts need to address the receiver position this offseason, whether that’s through the draft or free agency.
Elite level receivers like Chris Godwin, Allen Robinson, and Mike Williams will be available in free agency. These players would bring an immediate outside presence to a team that desperately needs one.
The draft is also full of wide receivers. David Bell, Johan Dotson, John Metchie III, and George Pickens could all be available by the time the Colts pick. They could also trade up to get a guy like Treylon Burks or Chris Olave.
Everything else is in place. The defense and running game are both top tier, but in the modern NFL it’s hard to defense your way to the Super Bowl. It’s a league that requires teams to be able to push the ball down the field, which the Colts didn’t do this year.
Wentz was in the bottom half of the NFL in yards per attempt this year. Adding an outside weapon would allow them to take more shots down field and round out their offense.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Colts modify the roster this offseason. They’re close to breaking through, hopefully they can pick up those last couple pieces they need to go on a run next year.
